Too Many Long Boxes!

End of Summer

Why The 80 Web Page Giant?
  by Matt Morrison

Eddie Blake was right. Everything starts with a joke.

Michael had just sent all of us an e-mail, saying that due to various problems in real life and with the website, the February issue would be a little late. Late enough, in fact to make him wonder about the feasibility of doing monthly issues until we got everything fixed. He suggested that we go bi-monthly until summer or that we do a larger than normal issue to satisfy everyone until we got everything fixed. That's when I jokingly replied. "Yeah. We'll call it the 80 Web Page Giant". I now have a new rule. Never make joke suggestions to the editor.

It's like why our comics review column is now called "Comics Cabana" instead of Comicopia. It turns out that someone else already runs a website called Comicopia, and although he hadn't contacted us, Michael wanted to change the name just to be safe. Well, he asked us all for ideas for new names. I sent a list of a few… Up-Standing Comics… World's Finest Reviews…. The Obligatory Review Page… and Comics Cabana. I don't know where the name came from, but I considered it the least of the bunch. And it drives me crazy because now every time I write a review for that part of the magazine, I get that Barry Mannilow tune "Copacabana" stuck in my head…

"At the Comics… Comics Cabana!
Hotter than a girl named Svetlana!"

Regardless, for some reason, Michael took me seriously then. He also took me seriously when I said "We'll call it the 80 Web Page Giant." And yes, he thought I meant it should actually be 80 pages long. Now that was really intended as a joke. I was partly serious about the idea of CALLING it an 80 Web Page Giant. We could have more than usual, of course.. but at the end, we'd have a drawing of Plastic Man or Ambush Bug painting over the "80" and saying "They'll never notice… who is anal retentive enough to actually COUNT how many pages there are?" April Fool's Day is coming up, right?

Still…. he did take me seriously, we rallied… and here it is. 80 pages of Fanzing.

Go ahead… count… It's all there! Okay. Satisified? If not, tuck into the new issue and if that doesn't satisfy you….complain to Michael.
